Saptotsava

  1. On the occasion of ‘Makara Sankramana’ every year 'Saptotsava' in Udupi is performed
  2. in memory of the consecration of the idol of Lord Sri Krishna here by Madhwacharya.
  3. The seven day celebrations concludes on the next day of the car festival.

Three towering chariots in which the 'Utsav Moortis' of Lord Sri Krishna, Anantheshwara and Chandramouleeshwara were seated arer pulled by the devotees at around 8 pm.  
  1. Lord Anantheshwara was seated on the 'Mahapooja' chariot,
  2. Lord Chandramouleeshwara on the 'Garuda' chariot while
  3. Lord Krishna is taken around in the 'Brahma' chariot.

  1. Formerly the Swamijis of each mutt used to worship Lord Krishna for two months.
  2. Later in about 1522-23, Vadhirajathirtha changed the worshipping pattern and made arrangements to worship Lord Krishna for two years in rotation.

Presiding deities

Though Krishna is the common worshipping God for all mutts, each mutt has its own God of adoration and authority. The Presiding deities of these mutts are,
  1. Narasimha (Kaniyuru),
  2. Vittala (Puttige, Shiruru and Pejavara),
  3. Kalinga Mardana Krishna(Krishnapura Adamaru),
  4. Bhuvaraha(Sode), and
  5. Sree Rama (Palimaru) respectively.

Eight Directions

There are four Durgalayas
  1. Kadiyali,
  2. Putturu,
  3. Kannarpadi and
  4. Byluru 
and four Skandalayas
  1. Thongodu,
  2. Mangodu,
  3. Arithodu and
  4. Muchilakodu 
within two square mile of Anantheshwara temple.

If the
  1. four directions starting from east to north-west are the dwellings of Shivaputra Skanda,
  2. the remaining four directions starting from west to northeast are the dwellings of Durgi.   

Places
